Lyric lagu Unsleeping unwaking unbeing unmaking
Time unfolds and refolds, our daily experiences continue in a never-ending unfurling. This piece is made of the sounds that make us and the sounds that unmake us. The wind that breathes us into being is the same that disperses our ashes at the moment of our unmaking — the same song that sings us into waking and that lulls us gently into sleep. Its sounds resonate within us and around us, writing themselves as much into this wind as into our bodies where they embed themselves deep within each of our cells. These cells are containers where the memory of each resonance is held, prisoners of our own collective sounding.
I wanted to make a piece that explores the tactility of sound, each sound caressing, aggressing, transpiercing, touching the body, reaching beneath the skin and vibrating within each cell. At the same time, sound is movement, fluid and multidimensional. It envelops the body in dynamic and agonising motion, setting it into a movement that unfurls like the wings of a bird that stretch out, take flight and retract on themselves, much like the mundane actions of sleeping, of waking, of being, and of making.
This piece was inspired by the late Carlotta Ikeda, whom I was lucky enough to see performing her Médée in 2013.
