Singer, songwriter and DJ, Afro B finished 2016 on a high. His breakthrough track Stay Winning, a raw, addictive mix of afrobeats, rap, and bashment, was an unstoppable example of the fresh sound sweeping through young London. Starting life as an underground club smash, Stay Winning fused sweet African melodies with a bass heavy beat that packed dancefloors from London to Lagos. Through word of mouth alone, the song swiftly rose to gatecrash a host of radio playlists. With strong support coming from BBC 1Xtra, Captial Xtra, Rinse FM and more, the track became – and remains- a fixture in the sets of DJs across the board, from Mista Jam to Tim Westwood to Toddla T.
Now Afro B returns to present his official debut mixtape: AfroWave. A showcase in versatility, the 8 track mini album sees the 23 year old deftly plucking elements from a range of genres, then uniting them into a vibe that remains unmistakably his own. Travelling from the expansive RnB of opener Good Wood, to the raucous bashment of Lil Keish feature Touch Right, to the street banging afro grime of Juice & Power, to chart-friendly tropical house closer Gonna Do, the tape is shot through with Afro B’s unmistakable sense of melody, his earworm vocal hooks turning each track into a potential dancefloor anthem.
Guest appearances are an exercise in quality over quantity, with hotly tipped rapper Yxng Bane, bashment bad gyal Lil Keish, Nigerian superstar Dr Sid and street favourite Sneakbo all appearing to drop fire verses. The tape itself is mixed and hosted by Radar Radio (and more recently 1Xtra) favourite DJ Kenny Allstar, whilst beats come from the cream of UK Afrobeats producers, with multiple tracks from Team Salut (probably best known for their production on Mr. Eazi’s global smash Dance For Me), alongside cuts from N2ThaA and ATG Musick.
Born in London to parents from the Ivory Coast, Afro B is a linchpin of the city’s thriving new movement of DJs, artists and producers cutting up African styles with UK grit. Having already made his name on the underground, first by hosting the phenomenally successful #AfrobeatsWithAfroB show on Reprezent and Radar Radio, and then with a string of street hits – including his 3 million+ viewed Tion Wayne collaborations Can’t Go Broke and Bae- get set for bigger things from the young artist; 2017 is the year he’ll sweep everyone onto the AfroWave…
